The Dutch-speaking Lutgardis primary school, located on Avenue de Béco in Ixelles, will occupy part of the site of the former gendarmerie school for 18 months while its current premises undergo renovation and expansion.
Brussels Minister of Finance Guy Vanhengel (Open Vld) and Minister-President Rudi Vervoort (PS) have announced today that the Brussels-Capital Region and the Flemish Community Commission (Vlaamse Gemeenschapscommissie - VGC) have joined forces to host the school’s pupils on this site, which is the subject of an ambitious conversion project, Usquare.brussels, which is destined for use as (among other things) an international academic facility by 2025.
Specifically, the Brussels Region will provide the school with a large building and a playground. The VGC will finance the work to adapt the facilities and make them safe for 220 pupils and their teachers. The opening of this temporary school is scheduled for 1 September 2018.
By 2020, the pupils and teachers of Lutgardis will be able to return to the school on Avenue Emile de Béco following its complete renovation. The VGC will invest three million euros in the operation. (B)
