See U's temporary ‘Velodroom’ will be opened this Saturday 1 June during the festivities 100 days before the ‘Grand Départ’ of the Tour de France 2019 which will take place in Brussels.
‘Velodroom’ has a twofold purpose: to promote non-motorised transport by encouraging visitors to cycle on the site and to add to the attractions of the temporary occupation of Usquare.brussels by offering a family-friendly sports facility open to all, young and old. Its design draws on the expertise of two of See U’s temporary occupants: the architects' collective dallas and the pro-cycling collective Hors Catégorie.
‘Velodroom’ is also an artistic project, created by Bruno Herzeel and Elke Thuy.
With a circumference of 100 metres and a width of 4.8 metres, the track goes from 3.5° to 32.4° on the bends. It’s made of Siberian larch (FSC class), a wood that is exceptionally resistant to outdoor conditions. Assembling this structure of 40 cubic metres of larch, weighing 40 tons, required 20,000 screws.
