Visite de chantier ― Usquare.brussels
Usquare.brussels is a redevelopment project for the former gendarmerie barracks in Ixelles, which aims to create an open, mixed and multifunctional residential area. This project, piloted by the SAU for the Brussels Capital Region, was built on a thorough analysis of the existing elements and intends to highlight the qualities of the existing heritage.
The first phase of the renovation of the site concerns the buildings located in front of the boulevard Général Jacques and the avenue de la Couronne, carried by the universities. This project embodies a resolutely circular approach and will serve as an example for the subsequent construction phases on the site.
The dismantling of some adjacent buildings provides the project with "waste streams" that can be transformed into raw materials for a new use. Bricks and glazing are reused, and other raw materials are recycled for flooring. New building materials are bio-based, such as clay-based plastering for acoustic insulation or hemp-lime. This approach has made it possible to considerably reduce the flow of incoming and outgoing construction materials, thus limiting the site's CO2 emissions.
It is important to note that the project is currently under construction. Visitors should wear thick-soled shoes, boots or construction shoes and not wear heels. A helmet will be provided at the entrance to the site. This tour is not suitable for children or people with limited mobility as it is difficult to access.
This project is carried out with the support of the ERDF program of the European Commission and the Brussels Capital Region. See less
